Rôhatsu sesshin: intensive meditation retreat

During the first week of december the traditional Rohatsu sesshin will take place. This is a unique opportunity to deepen one's practice by plunging, in silence, into sitting meditationzazen.

Rôhatsu's literal meaning is "the eighth day of the twelth month". The 8th of december is traditionally kept as a commemoration of the awakening of Shâkyamuni Buddha. It was on this day that Shâkyamuni was enlightened when he saw the evening star after having spent several weeks in zazen.

In order to celebrate this historic occasion zen temples organise a Rôhatsu sesshin.

The specificity of this sesshin - retreat - is that it involves a more or less continuous practice of zazen for 12 to 14 hours a day, in complete silence and with only minimal teaching or samou. Everything is focussed on zazen which starts very early in the morning and finishes around 9:30pm.

The teaching will be given by the Buddhist Master Olivier Reigen Wang-Genh. 

All health security rules are in place at Ryumonji. They will be communicated to you upon arrival.
We ask for a personal commitment to respect them. This is to take care of our health as well as that of others. Please bring a negative PCR or antigenic test less than 48 hours old. This Rôhatsu-sesshin is of course open to everyone, for both beginners and ordained people alike, and is an opportunity to delve into the heart of Soto Zen. It is an irreplaceable experience for all practitioners of the Buddha's path. 

It will take place from Sunday 28th of November to Saturday 4th of December.

RATES

  • Full retreat: 294 € (224 € for students and job seekers) 
  • Bed sheet rental: 6 €
  • To participate in the activities of the monastery, you must be a member of the Association of the Zen Temple of Weiterswiller. Annual fee: 15 €.

To bring

  • For meditation (zazen): kimono OR comfortable, dark clothing for practice. If you have a zafu (black or brown meditation cushion), you can bring it. 
  • For meals: bowl + spoon + fork + a large dark napkin to wrap the bowl + a small white handkerchief-type napkin
  • For the beds: single duvet cover + single fitted sheet + pillowcase - Sleeping bags not allowed. 
  • For everyday use: shoes and work clothes, sandals or flip-flops (to be removed easily), slippers for indoors 
  • Possibility to borrow some items on site. 

Note: mobile phones must be completely switched off throughout the monastery in order to maintain a quiet atmosphere. Possibility to make phone calls in the car parks.
