Teisho: Teachings during zazen

In the Soto Zen Buddhist tradition, the teachings can sometimes be surprising in their ephemeral, immediate and sometimes even silent nature, aimed at destabilising the mind and touching the spirit in depth. However, they can also take on more structured forms, such as :

  • Dokusan: a private conversation with the teacher, more intimate and confidential
  • Kusen: instructions given during zazen, often brief and fragmentary.
  • Teisho: the most formal form, in which the teacher shares his or her experience of zazen while expounding an aspect of the Buddha's doctrine.
