Zaike Retreat
Zaike Tokudo is the name given to monks and nuns who continue to live in a social and family setting. It literally means "practicing while keeping house". These tokudo in the heart of the cities are, however, expected to play an important role in the city dojos or in the monasteries where they go on a very regular basis.
Preparing and eating meals is a real practice in our tradition and conveys profound and important teachings.
This subject directly affects the lives of all living beings and for billions of them it is central, as food is essential for life.
In our western consumer society, our relationship with food has become unhealthy, both in terms of the quality of food and our relationship with food; certainly this issue will become central in the years to come.
Soto Zen has much valuable to contribute to this topic: common sense knowledge, great pragmatism, but also spiritual wisdom, because a single grain of rice is the fruit of all-encompassing energy.
During these four days we will cover the teachings of the Tenzo Kyokun and the Eiheishingi, the translation of the Meal Sutra (Gyohatsu Nenju), the rituals, the practice of the oryoki (bowls) and the preparation of meals in the kitchen and during the samu.
Breakfast after the ceremony will be taken in the zendo, the place where we sit zazen. We learn the traditional ritual and the gestures and procedures specific to our tradition.
I encourage all monks, nuns and bodhisattvas to participate in this training, which is open to all. Immediately following, the Gotan'E Sesshin (a similar practice to the Rohatsu Sesshin) will start for the following four days. (From 7 to 10 April).
"Consider the pot as your own head, consider every drop of water as your own blood" (Tenzo Kyokun by Master Dôgen).
Master Olivier Reigen Wang-Genh
