Zen in everyday practice

Everyday practice

Over the past few months, many people came to the monastery for a first retreat. In order to help go back to daily life and to suggest some ideas for a day-to-day practice, we sent them the information below. You may find it useful too.

  1. Stay connected with a Sangha
  2. Follow the teachings of zen master Olivier Reigen Wang-Genh
  3. Set up your daily rituals

At the temple, the conditions are rather ideal. It is easy to get up early, to stay focused, and to forget the daily worries. At home, at work, with your family, you can also follow a spiritual practice. So, once you get back home, how can you maintain these good habits and – why not? – go further?

1. Stay connected with a Sangha

The Sangha is the community of practitioners. A group of persons, elder practitioners, mutual supportive people.

Practice online with " Zen Online "

Microphones have been installed in the dojo and the chapel of the monastery. They are turned on at each zazen and ceremony and retransmitted on our website.

How does it work? It's very simple: an audio player is on the Zen online page, press play - and turn up the sound ;-)

No need for a password.

The system is available for smartphones through the browser and tablets.

3. Set up your daily rituals

The rituals are repeated practices with a deep meaning. They give a sense to our existence. Because they are repeated, they set our lives on track, without having to appeal to will power.

  • Light incense each morning to start the day and recite the four vows :

As many as there are beings, I vow to save them all

As many as the illusions are, I vow to appease them all.
As many as the doors of Dharma are, I vow to pass through them all...
As perfect as the Buddha's Way is, I vow to fulfill it.

  • Find one or more fixed days in your week to do zazen, in order to install a habit of behavior.
  • Try as often as possible to take your meals in silence.
  • At the end of each day, end it with 3 prostrations, to end the day in a spiritual way and make a vow to continue the practice
